Project Planning in the Timeline
In the Timeline, you see all tasks of a project over time.
You navigate the Timeline by scrolling left, right, up, or down. There's no limit to how far into the future or past you can scroll.
Key Benefits and Use Cases
The Timeline is your quick overview for your project and a pretty solid planning tool.
-
Switch between views (Compact or Gantt), depending on how detailed you want to plan
-
Mark milestones with date and color so important days don't get lost
-
Make dependencies visible through links between tasks
-
Export the Timeline as PNG or SVG including the current display (e.g. zoom level, language, Dark Mode)
How to Use the Timeline
Switch Views (Compact or Gantt)
You change the Timeline view by clicking on the view you want.
-
Compact view without strict hierarchy for tasks
-
Gantt view with tasks and their associated task lists for more detailed planning
Create and Delete Milestones
-
Click on the desired date in the timeline
-
Set the name, date, and color in the pop-up
-
Click on the milestone again to delete it
The date will be marked in the corresponding color and a line will be drawn across the Timeline.

Advanced Options and Action Menu
Open the Action Menu
Click the three-dot button to the right of the view options "Gantt" and "Compact". A dropdown menu opens with the following options:
- Move dependent tasks along: Turn on the toggle to automatically move dependent tasks when making changes. When this mode is enabled, all tasks linked as following will be shifted by the same duration when a task is moved or the due date is changed via drag and drop.
Automatic moving of linked tasks only happens in the Timeline when the mode is enabled. Changes to tasks outside the Timeline, such as in the task details view, will not automatically move other tasks.
Whether the mode is enabled depends on the user and is not saved for the entire project.

- Open in Calendar: Shows the calendar view
- Save as Template: Allows you to create a task template

FAQ
What's the Difference Between Compact View and Gantt View?
The compact view shows the project Timeline without strict task hierarchy. In Gantt view, you see tasks and their associated task lists for more detailed planning.
Why Do Times Change When I Only Adjust the Start or End of a Task?
If you've set custom times, they're only kept if you move the entire task. If you change only the start or end, awork sets the start to 08:00 and the end to 18:00.
What's Included in the Timeline Export?
The export (PNG or SVG) includes all displayed tasks and the entire time period of those tasks plus one week at the start and end. The current view is used, including zoom level, language, and Light or Dark Mode.
