Duplicating Projects
Sometimes you just need a quick copy - without the hassle of setting up a formal template.
When you duplicate a project, the complete structure is copied into a new, independent project in seconds.
You can choose which project data should be reset before duplicating.
The result is a clean copy that you can start working with right away - with no connection to the original.
When to use project duplication
- You're starting a new client project that follows the same workflow as an existing one
- You're repeating a campaign or service with a consistent task structure
- You want to use an active project as a quick ad-hoc template without having to create a formal template
How to duplicate a project
To duplicate a project, you need write access to the project and the right to create projects in your workspace.
-
Open the action menu of a project.
-
Select Duplicate.
-
Choose which optional content should be reset.
-
Confirm with Duplicate.
The new project will be named [Project name] (Copy) and can be renamed.
Depending on the project size, duplicating can take a moment. For larger projects with many tasks, files, or documents, it may take a bit longer for all content to be fully available.
What always gets copied
The following is always included in every duplicate:
- Task lists and tasks (including descriptions and checklists)
- Custom fields and tags
- Estimated effort and task dependencies
- Recurrence rules
- Automations
- Budget
What you can optionally reset
Before creating the duplicate, you can independently reset the following content. All are set to retain by default (meaning they will be duplicated unless you choose otherwise):
- Reset task status
- Reset custom field values
- Reset project members
- Reset assigned users
- Reset followers
- Reset docs
- Reset files
What never gets copied
- Task and project comments
- Logged time
- Connect users
- Calendar bookings and scheduled time blocks on tasks
💡 If you're viewing your projects with an active filter (for example, by status), the duplicate might not appear right away - it may not meet the current filter criteria. Remove or adjust the filter if you can't find it.
FAQ
Are all tasks copied when duplicating?
Yes - all tasks, task lists, checklists, descriptions, custom fields, tags, estimated effort, recurrence rules, and task dependencies are always copied.
Are files and documents copied?
Yes, by default. You can optionally reset them during duplication. If they're retained, new objects are created with no connection to the originals.
Can I exclude team members from being copied?
Yes. Project members and task assignments are both optional and set to retain by default. You can disable both independently before confirming.
Are my automations carried over?
Yes. Individual project automations are always duplicated. If the source project uses a workflow, workflow-driven automations are intentionally not carried over. Automations that reference users or entities that can't be triggered in the new project are automatically disabled.
Are comments copied?
No. Task and project comments are never copied.
Is logged time carried over?
No. All logged time stays with the original project. The budget target is retained.
Are external team members (Connect users) carried over?
No. Connect users are excluded when carrying over members. They need to be manually re-invited.
Are recurring tasks recalculated?
No. Recurrence rules are carried over unchanged - dates are not shifted relative to the duplication date. Check recurring tasks after creation if the original dates are in the past.
Can I duplicate multiple projects at once?
No, projects can only be duplicated one at a time.
Is the duplicate linked to the original?
The duplicate is completely independent. Changes to either project won't affect the other.
