Creating a New Project
You can create a new project in the following places in awork:
- Via the + button in the main menu on the left, right next to Projects. This appears when you hover your mouse over the word Projects.
- In the Projects overview (Main menu > Projects) using the + Project button in the upper left corner.
- Using the Shortcut P.
- Select Add Project via the + button in the action bar at the bottom center.
How to create a project
Step 1: Fill in the project details
In this step, you'll set up your project with the basic information:
- Name: Give your project a unique name so you and your team can easily find it and recognize it in overviews.
- Client: You can assign a client to your project for better organization and grouping. The project will automatically use the client's logo as the project image if you don't upload your own.
- Project Image: The project image gives your project stronger brand recognition. If you assign a client to the project that already has an image, that image will be used.
- Description: You can add a brief project description here.
- Time Budget & End Date: Your project can have a time budget if you want to manage progress through time tracking. A project end date is always recommended.
- Project Members: Assigning users to a project serves two purposes. On one hand, users will then see this project in their projects list and it will appear in suggestions, for example when tracking time. The second purpose is to set permissions that a user should have on the project. Each user can be assigned to the project with a specific permission role.
- Team Membership: If you want your new project to be visible to specific teams, you need to select the teams here, provided teams are configured in your awork workspace.
- Project Type: The project type is a way to categorize your projects, for example if you want to analyze your time by project type. This field is optional and only visible if project types are configured in your workspace.
You can edit all of these fields even after the project has been created.
Step 2: Select a template (optional)
Selecting a template is optional and will only be suggested if you already have a template in your awork workspace. If you want to create an empty project with default settings, select Skip.
If you select a template, the settings and tasks from the template will be copied into your newly created project. This can save you a lot of time if you regularly work on similar projects.
Within your project, you can now customize all settings and tasks from the template as needed without affecting the original template.

Step 3: Your project is created
After selecting a template or skipping this step, your project will be created immediately.
Best practices and troubleshooting tips
Enable Smart alerts
- You can now enable awork Smart alerts for your project in the project settings. These help you and your project members keep the project on track with time and budget.
- Smart alerts send helpful emails when certain budget thresholds are reached and when due dates are approaching.
If Teams are enabled, select at least one team
If Teams are enabled in your awork workspace and you're part of one of the teams, you need to select at least one team when creating a project. Otherwise, the project might not be visible to you and your team. This depends on your permission configuration.
If you can't create a project
- If you're missing the button to create a new project or it's hidden, you don't have sufficient permissions.
- In that case, it's best to contact your internal awork administrator or team lead.
