Import data from Trello
Export your Trello board as CSV, split columns in Excel, then map fields to the awork import template to transfer projects and tasks
If you're switching from Trello to awork, this article explains how to export your data from Trello, prepare the CSV file in Excel, and transfer the contents to the awork import template.
Important: You can only import your data after you've exported it from Trello and put it into a format that you can copy into the awork import template.
You need admin permissions or access to the workspace settings to use the importer.
How to import data from Trello
Export data from Trello
First, export your data from Trello. You can find instructions here: Export data from Trello.
Trello only allows Business Class customers to export data. Alternatively, you can install the Trello Chrome Extension.
Split the CSV into columns in Excel
Trello exports data as a .csv file, which you can open in Excel. All the data will appear in a single column, separated by commas.
To split the data into separate columns:
-
Select the column containing the data
-
In Excel, go to Daten and then Text in Spalten
-
In the pop-up, select getrennt
-
Select Komma and click Fertig stellen
Match the data (Trello export → awork import template)
Your data will now appear in separate columns. You can copy the relevant data from these columns into the awork import template.
Match the fields as follows:
awork | Trello |
Project name | Board name |
Customer | Name |
Task name | Field not available in the Trello export |
Description | Desc |
Activity | Field not available in the Trello export |
Start date | Field not available in the Trello export |
End date | Due |
Estimated effort | Field not available in the Trello export |
Assignee | Members |
Status | idList |
Match the data using the Chrome Extension
If you're using the Trello Chrome Extension, use the following mapping:
awork | Trello |
Project name | Board name |
Customer | Field not available in the Trello export |
Task name | Title |
Description | Description |
Activity | Field not available in the Trello export |
Start date | Field not available in the Trello export |
End date | Due |
Estimated effort | Field not available in the Trello export |
Assignee | Members |
Status | List |
Upload data to awork
You can then upload the data to awork as described here.
Tips and best practices
-
Split the Excel columns first before copying data into the awork import template
-
Check for missing Trello fields: Some awork fields aren't available in the Trello export (see the tables)
-
Choose the right mapping: The Trello export and Chrome Extension use different field names (for example, Status)
