Onboarding Tutorial

Getting familiar with awork.

Written by Isabel Helbig

The awork onboarding tutorial helps new users get familiar with their workspace step by step. It guides them through key features like creating projects, tracking time, working with Docs, or using the planner.

As a workspace admin, you can control which parts of the tutorial are visible for each permission role. This lets you keep onboarding simple and relevant for internal team members, external collaborators, or admins.

Key benefits and use cases

Not every user needs to learn everything. Role-based visibility keeps onboarding focused.

  • Reduce complexity for new users

  • Focus each role on what’s relevant

  • Help your team get productive faster

The tutorial automatically adapts based on the role settings you define.

How to set up the Onboarding Tutorial

What admins can control in the Onboarding Tutorial

In the permission settings of a permission role, admins can show or hide specific onboarding areas for users:

  • Team onboarding progress
Controls whether users can see the onboarding leaderboard

  • Admin onboarding tasks (for Admin-role only)
Shows or hides onboarding content for workspace admins

  • Time tracking
Shows or hides onboarding tasks related to time tracking

  • Docs
Shows or hides onboarding tasks for awork Docs

  • Planner
Shows or hides onboarding tasks for the planner

Turn sections on or off for a role

  1. Open Settings

  2. Go to Permissions

  3. Select the Workspace-wide permission role you want to edit

  4. Scroll down to Onboarding tutorial visibility

  5. Turn individual items on or off by clicking on the eye-icon (Show/Hide)

The changes apply to all users with that role.

If admins turn off a section for a role:

  • Users no longer see the related onboarding tasks

  • Hidden tasks are not counted toward onboarding progress

  • The tutorial stays focused on relevant work

This creates a clear and role-specific onboarding experience without unnecessary distractions.

How the leaderboard works / "Team onboarding progress"

The leaderboard shows how far users in your workspace have progressed in the onboarding tutorial. It helps make onboarding visible and encourages teams to complete it together.

  • Show the leaderboard by enabling Team onboarding progress for the role

  • Hide the leaderboard by disabling Team onboarding progress

To access the Team onboarding progress, click on the Support & Help Button on the top right, then Open guide.

Important: Admins always have access to the leaderboard. For all other roles, visibility depends on your settings.

User-Onboarding

All users can access the free self-onboarding via the Onboarding Area, available directly in the awork workspace for introduction and training purposes.

If you’ve been invited as a new user to your team’s awork workspace:

  1. Navigate to the Onboarding Area via the Support & Help button

  2. Click Open guide

The personalized guide is tailored to your permission level in awork, so you’ll only see what’s truly relevant to you. For the best learning experience, go through the tutorials in the suggested order.
