awork Desktop App (macOS & Windows)

With the awork desktop app, you can use awork conveniently on your computer without having to open your browser. The app is exactly the same application that you already know from the browser.

Supported operating systems are Windows 10, Windows 11 (recommended), and macOS 13 (Ventura) on both Intel and Apple Silicon devices. See also the System Requirements for further details.

Download & Installation

Download

You can find the download links for the awork desktop app here on our website.

Installation

Windows

After downloading the application, double-click on awork.exe. You'll be guided through the installation process. After that, you'll find awork in your Start menu.

macOS

The macOS app comes in two versions: One for Intel x64 processors and one for Apple M processors (since 2020). Make sure you download the correct version to avoid performance issues.

After downloading the application, double-click on the awork.dmg file. A window will open as shown below. Drag the awork app (on the left) into the Applications folder (on the right). The app is now installed.

When you open the Applications section in Finder, you'll find the awork app there. You can simply drag it to your macOS Dock to have awork always at your fingertips.

When you start the application for the first time, you'll need to confirm once that you want to launch the application on your device.

Notifications

When you start the application for the first time, awork will ask if you want to allow notifications for awork. It's recommended that you enable this. Once the application is running but in the background, you'll receive your in-app notifications through the operating system. These will automatically be suppressed as soon as you enter Focus Mode, for example.

When the app is in the foreground, meaning you're working in it, you'll receive notifications as usual within awork itself. The same applies if you've enabled Focus Mode.

You can also enable or disable your notifications later in your operating system under Settings > Notifications.

Once you've logged into the awork app for the first time, awork remembers that you've installed it. When you open a link, for example from an email, you'll first be directed to awork in your browser. A small popup will appear at the top right of the window asking if you want to open the page in the desktop app. Click the button to do so. You may need to confirm opening the app in your browser once.

If you always want to open your links in the desktop app, simply enable the small switch in the popup. Once you've enabled this and open a link, you'll be taken to an almost empty awork page and will need to confirm opening the application once. However, from this page you can also navigate to the actual page via the "Open in Browser" link without using the desktop app.

If you want to disable the default opening of the desktop app for links, you can do so on the page mentioned above using the switch, or in your account settings.

Tabs

The awork app supports working with tabs. These are displayed in the tab bar of the app window.

To open a new tab, click the plus symbol at the far left of the tab bar. You can also open a page, project, or other links in new tabs directly by holding down CMD (Mac) or CTRL (Windows) while clicking.

You can change the order of open tabs as you like. To move a tab, hold it with the mouse button pressed and move it left or right.

To close a tab, hover your mouse over the tab and click the X.

Tabs support common shortcuts such as:

  • Create new tab (CMD/CTRL + T)
  • Close active tab (CMD/CTRL + W)
  • Refresh tabs (CMD/CTRL + R)
  • Copy link of tab (CMD/CTRL + L)

Updates

The desktop app automatically checks once a day to see if new updates are available. As soon as a new app update is available, it's recommended that you perform it. However, these updates come less frequently.

More often, you'll receive a notification within the application that a new awork version is available. When you click on the notification, awork reloads and you're up to date.

Offline Use

The awork desktop app does not have offline functionality. awork is a collaborative application that always requires a connection to the awork servers so that data is always current.

FAQ

The app isn't working, what should I do?

Please first check that you have the latest version of the app installed and close it via the Task Manager, Activity Monitor, or similar. When you restart, an update should be triggered if one is available and hasn't already happened automatically.
