Slack integration

Connect Slack to awork Agents as a connector to search messages, read conversation history, and send messages or manage files

With the Slack integration for awork, you can post project updates in Slack channels, create tasks, and track time. You can also connect Slack to awork Agents as a connector, allowing them to search Slack messages, read conversation history, and perform approved actions.

Project linking and the Agent connector are set up separately. Choose the setup that matches your use case.

Note about AI features: AI-generated responses from awork may be inaccurate or incomplete. Always check AI-generated responses and important information before relying on them or sharing them.

Use Slack with awork Agents

With the Slack connector, an Agent can use information from Slack to help with your work in awork. The data and actions available depend on the scopes granted, the tools enabled, and the permissions of the connected Slack account.

  • Find messages and information: Search messages, files, people, and channels.
  • Read conversations: Read and summarize accessible channel and thread history.
  • Perform actions: Send or draft messages, create conversations, add reactions, manage Canvases and Lists, and upload files, provided the required permissions have been granted.

Set up Slack as an Agent connector

  1. Open the AI Library and select Konnektoren.
  2. Select an existing Slack connector or add Slack from the catalog using + Konnektor.
  3. Complete the connector settings shown and add a Verbindung. Sign in to Slack and review the requested permissions. If you're asked for an OAuth Client ID and Client Secret, follow the Slack setup in the connector catalog.
  4. Add the connector in your Agent's configuration. Adding the connector alone does not create an authenticated connection. For more information, see Create your own AI Agents.
  5. Start the Agent in awork and describe which Slack information it should use or which action it should perform.

Optional real-time search: Real-time search in Slack is optional. Anyone who wants to use this feature must personally authorize the requested user token scopes in Slack. Installing the app as a workspace administrator does not replace this personal authorization. Without this approval, real-time search won't be available to that person, but the other integration features can still be used.

A connection does not automatically expand your access rights. An Agent can only use the Slack data and actions allowed by the connection in use and your permissions. Sharing an Agent does not automatically give others access to your Slack account.

Example prompts for the Agent

  • "Summarize last week's discussion in the #projekt-alpha channel and list the open questions."
  • "Search for messages about the approval deadline for Project Alpha and link to the relevant results."
  • "Draft a project update for #projekt-alpha based on our current awork tasks."

You don't need to link a Slack channel to an awork Projekt to use this feature. The following sections describe the separate setup for project updates, task actions, and time tracking in Slack.

Main benefits and use cases

Bring your project work closer to where the communication happens:

  • Post project updates in Slack channels when events take place in a linked awork Projekt
  • Create tasks directly from Slack in the project linked to the channel
  • Edit tasks from Slack notifications using buttons in the task message
  • Track time from Slack with slash commands
  • Get awork notifications in Slack through the awork app within Slack
  • Use Slack with awork Agents to search messages, read channel and thread history, and perform approved Slack actions

How the Slack integration works

Set up the Slack integration

  1. Go to Einstellungen (the gear icon at the bottom left of the main menu) > Integrationen
  2. Open the integration library and select Slack
  3. In Slack, enter the name of your Slack workspace and allow access
  4. You'll be automatically redirected back to your awork workspace

Project updates can be sent to Slack without account matching. However, if you want to interact with awork from Slack, you need to link your accounts.

  • Interact with the integration in Slack for the first time and follow the prompt to link your accounts
  • Or enter /connect in Slack to link your Slack account to your awork account

Tip: awork messages in Slack are sent in the language of the person who created the link.

When a Projekt is linked to a Slack channel, awork can post Projekt events and updates, such as task status changes, in that channel. You can also create tasks for the Projekt directly from the Slack channel.

1. Open the Projekt details

2. Click the Projekt's action button and select Mit Slack verknüpfen

3. Select the Slack channel where messages should be posted

4. Choose which events should be posted in the Slack channel

The linked Slack channel is shown in the Projekt details.

Note: Each Slack channel can only be linked to one awork Projekt. Similarly, only one Slack channel can be linked to each Projekt.

Private Slack channels can only be linked directly from within the channel.

1. Open the private Slack channel you want to link

2. Invite the awork bot by typing @awork in the channel, then confirm the invitation

3. Enter /link to open the Projekt selection

4. Select the awork Projekt you want to link to the channel

To remove the link to a private channel, use /unlink. You can configure notification settings in the awork Projekt.

Edit tasks from Slack

When a task notification appears in Slack, you can edit the task directly from Slack. Use the buttons below the task message to:

  • Change the status
  • Assign someone
  • Set a due date
  • Add a comment to the task

Create tasks and track time from Slack (slash commands)

You can use the following slash commands to perform actions in awork directly from Slack:

  • /add [task] creates a new task in the awork Projekt
  • /comment [task]:[text] adds a comment to the specified task
  • /connect links your Slack account to your awork account
  • /disconnect unlinks your Slack account from your awork account
  • /link [project] links an awork Projekt to the current Slack channel
  • /start [task/project] starts tracking time for a task or Projekt
  • /stop stops the current time tracking
  • /unlink removes the link between an awork Projekt and a Slack channel

Example: Post /add Create logo design in Slack to create a task called Create logo design in the linked Projekt.

Get awork notifications in Slack

After you've linked your Slack account to your awork account, you'll find awork under Apps in Slack. Your awork notifications can appear there once you configure this in awork.

You can also use any / commands there, create private tasks, or start tracking time.

FAQ

Can an awork Agent read Slack messages?

Yes. If you've set up the Slack connector with an authenticated connection and added it to the Agent, it can read accessible messages and channel or thread history. Access depends on the scopes granted and the permissions of the connected account. Optional real-time search also requires you to personally authorize the requested user token scopes in Slack.

Does a Slack channel need to be linked to an awork Projekt for the Agent to use it?

No. The Agent connector and linking a Projekt to a Slack channel are separate features. Projekt linking is used for Projekt updates and task actions in the linked channel.

What actions can an Agent perform in Slack?

Depending on the scopes granted and the tools enabled, an Agent can search for and read information, send or draft messages, create conversations, add reactions, manage Canvases and Lists, and upload files. It can only perform actions allowed by the connection in use and the Slack permissions.

How do I set up the Slack integration?

Go to Einstellungen > Integrationen, open the integration library, select Slack, and then enter the name of your Slack workspace. Allow access when you're redirected to Slack.

You'll be prompted to do this the first time you interact with the integration in Slack. Alternatively, enter /connect in Slack.

Why are awork messages in Slack displayed in a particular language?

awork messages are sent in the language of the person who created the link.

No. Each Slack channel can only be linked to one awork Projekt, and only one Slack channel can be linked to each Projekt.

Open the private channel in Slack, invite the bot using @awork, and confirm the invitation. Then use /link to select the Projekt. To remove the link, use /unlink.
